Breaking the Silence: The Eye-Opening Truth About Reclaiming Your Power
We’ve all heard the phrase "Silence is golden." We’ve been told that keeping our heads down, "staying in our lane," and not "starting drama" is a sign of strength. In many of our homes and communities, especially for People of Color, silence has been framed as a survival tool: a way to keep the peace and protect the family.
But here is the eye-opening truth: Silence isn't peace. It’s a slow leak.
When you swallow your words to avoid a conflict, you aren't "keeping the peace": you’re just starting a war inside yourself. That silence doesn't just sit there; it ferments. It turns into resentment, anxiety, and deep-seated emotional damage.
At Circle of Truth, LLC, we see this every day. We see the toll it takes on your self-esteem, your relationships, and your mental health. It’s time to stop letting silence destroy you and start making Power Movements.
The Lie: Silence is Strength
Let’s get real for a second. In POC communities, there is often a massive amount of pressure to "be strong." For Black women, it’s the "Strong Black Woman" trope. For men, it’s the pressure to never show vulnerability. We are taught that to complain is to be weak, and to speak up is to be "difficult."
But this version of "strength" is a trap.
When you stay silent about your trauma, your addiction, or your hurt, you aren't being strong: you’re being isolated. Silence is where shame lives. Stigma feeds on what we don't talk about. If we don’t name it, we can’t claim our power over it.
The Damage: The Slow Leak of Emotional Trauma
Think of your emotions like a pressure cooker. If you never let the steam out, eventually, the whole thing is going to blow. Before the explosion, though, there’s the damage of the "leak":
- Physical Toll: Stress from unexpressed emotions shows up in your body: tight chests, headaches, stomach issues, and chronic fatigue.
- Mental Fog: When you’re busy suppressing your truth, you don’t have the mental energy for your dreams.
- The "Freeze" Response: Trauma often leaves us in a "freeze" state. We become numb, disconnected, and unable to make decisions for our own lives.
This is the "Emotional Damage" we’re talking about. It’s not just a meme; it’s a reality that keeps you stuck in cycles of family conflict and low self-worth.
The Shift: Switching to Power Movements
So, how do we stop the damage? We switch from silence to Power Movements.
A Power Movement isn’t about being loud for the sake of noise. It’s about active, intentional reclamation of your voice and your life. It’s moving from a state of "happening to" to a state of "doing."
1. Breaking the Internal Silence
Your first Power Movement happens inside. It’s the moment you stop lying to yourself and say, "I am not okay, and that is okay." Admitting you are struggling with addiction, trauma, or self-esteem isn't a defeat; it’s the first step of a revolution.
2. Setting "Sunday Boundaries"
In our practice, we believe in the power of rest. We block Sundays for rest: no work, no expectations. A major Power Movement is learning to say "No" without an explanation. Your time and your peace are yours to protect. If a relationship or a job is draining you to the point of silence, a Power Movement is setting a boundary that says, "I come first."
3. Speaking Your Truth (Even if Your Voice Shakes)
Reclaiming your power means having those "uncomfortable" conversations. It means telling a family member, "When you say that, it hurts me," or telling a partner, "I need more support than I’m getting." You are not "starting drama"; you are demanding respect.
Why This Matters in POC Communities
We have to talk about the unique pressure we face. For too long, our survival depended on our silence. But survival is not the same as living.
When we break the silence, we aren't just healing ourselves; we are breaking generational cycles. We are showing the next generation that their feelings are valid, that their mental health matters, and that they don't have to carry the "bricks" of previous generations' unspoken pain.
Reclaiming your power is a radical act of self-love. It’s an "eye-opener" to realize that the world won't end if you speak up: but your world will certainly change.
